Or that many appliances still have little lights on even though they’re off? Plug these items into power strips and turn the power strip off when you’re not using them. This prevents them from using electricity when they’re off.

4. Buy window insulation kits. These are inexpensive plastic coverings for your windows that are completely transparent and nearly invisible. Most home centers sell them. Put these on your windows and save big money on your heating and cooling bills. Easy!

5. Install a programmable thermostat. These will automatically turn the heat down when you’re not home and when you’re sleeping. And during the summer they’ll turn your air conditioning off when you’re at work and turn it back on 15 minutes before you come home. Saves money and you don’t even have to think about it! 6. Hang a clothes line. Learn from the women of wealth in the 1950's and use a clothes line to dry your clothes instead of running the dryer so much.
